halloween canon S90 test
so i got this new point and shoot, the canon S90. i figured i would do a little camera review here on the old blogorooski, and there is no better night than halloween to test the camera on so here goes.
for starters in low light the built in flash ( which is actually really good ) is essential for shooting in low light with this camera. with a combination of high ISO and a small point and shoot sensor, the pictures in low light turn out really, and i mean REALLY grainy.
as you can see in this picture the grain is a little bit out of control, but in defense of the camera i was shooting at ISO 800 so that is to be expected. i guess im just used to my nice 5d mark 2 where i can shoot 3200 ISO and never get an ounce of grain.
but the good news about the grain issue is that the camera shoots raw files, so even with the grainiest of photos you can give them some love in lightroom and make it look like you shot that way on purpose.
the camera is fully manual, which is the main reason i decided on this camera. your shutter speed only goes up to 1600, but you get a nice long 15 seconds of exposure time if you so choose to shoot that way.
the f 2.0 lens is a really nice feature. i haven’t quite figured out the best the best distance to get the maximum result though for the lans. the macro settings seem to do the trick though when i really wana blow it out.

a couple more open exposure shots
all in all the tickle monster gives this camera a 7 out of 10. this could change though the more i get into it. it usually takes me a couple weeks to really get the gist of a camera and get used to operating it. its very functional and really easy to use. the sensor leaves a little to be desired and the lens while is says f 2.0 really only gives you the depth of an f 4.0. but like i said this could all change once i figure out how to optimize the performance. oh yea and it doesn’t shoot HD. if it shot HD i would give it an 8 out of 10.
